Once occupied by the Moors and named Gibr al Tariq after the Moorish leader Tariq, its name has changed to what it is now, Gibraltar. It has been a disputed territory between Spain and Great Britain, but now completely British, on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula at the entrance of the Mediterranean. It has an area of 6.8 square kilometres (2.6 sq mi) and a northern border with Andalusia, Spain. TheRock of Gibraltar is the major landmark of the region. At its foot is the densely populated city area, with a main street full of duty free shops, and home to almost 30,000 Gibraltarians. Famous for its monkeys who live near the top of the rock, Gibraltar Barbary macaques are descended from North African populations. Don't feed them as that is against the law. Eric and I finally made it to Gibraltar during our travels in August 2008. Gibraltar remains a British Overseas Territory and has been a possession of the UK since Spain relinquished control in 1713 with the Treaty of Utrecht. While Gibraltar is part of the European Union, and you can see the EU flag flying beside the Union Jack and Gibraltar flag, Gibraltar remains outside of the EU Customs Union. The UK is also not a full member of Schengen. Due to this, full border controls remain between both countries. You can see they still have lines for articles to declare or nothing to declare. Even with these factors and Spain and the UK's past history with respect to Gibraltar, the border crossing is nowadays a formality, where guards perform nothing more than a cursory inspection of passports. The video starts looking at Gibraltar from Avenida de Principe de Asturias in La Línea, Spain. The next scene has us looking for the border crossing. It's a bit tricky because you have to turn right at a roundabout and loop back around a long side road near where the cruise ships dock. This road is meant for the long line at the border that occurs whenever a plane is taking off or landing since Winston Churchill Ave crosses through the runway. This will remain the case until the runway bypass road is completed on the east side of the runway. If you miss the turnout for customs, you stay on Avenida de Principe de Asturias and drive straight past the border and have to loop around. (We made this mistake once!) Notice that graffiti covers most of the signs giving directions to Gibraltar. Spanish tend not to be too happy about the UK keeping control. After admiring the Gibraltar license plates and waiting aimlessly behind a stalled car for a few minutes, we arrive at the border. I mistakenly start talking in English to the first official I see, who actually is from the Policía Nacional. When entering or leaving Gibraltar you have to present your passports twice, once to the Policía Nacional (Spanish authorities) and again to the British. The guard informs us in Spanish to keep our passports out because we'll be asked to present them again. After a brief and friendly chat with the British immigration official, we are in Gibraltar and are crossing the runway to get into town. Note: You're getting a picture of the dashboard at the actual border since the guards don't take too kindly to videophotography. :)

Gibraltar International Airport or North Front Airport is the civilian airport that serves the British overseas territory of Gibraltar. The runway is owned by the Ministry of Defence for use by the Royal Air Force as RAF Gibraltar. Civilian operators use the civilian-operated terminal. National Air Traffic Services hold the contract for provision of air navigation services at the airport. In 2015, the airport handled 444,336 passengers and 408,757 kg of cargo on 4,100 total flights. Winston Churchill Avenue (the main road heading towards the land border with Spain) intersects the airport runway, and consequently has to be closed every time a plane lands or departs. The History Channel programme Most Extreme Airports ranked the airport the fifth most extreme airport in the world. It is exposed to strong cross winds around the rock and across the Bay of Algeciras, making landings in winter particularly uncomfortable. Monarch Airlines is the largest operator at Gibraltar International, operating flights to Birmingham, London Gatwick, London Luton, Manchester Airport.[3] Both routes are operated by an Airbus A320-200. easyJet operates seven weekly flights to London Gatwick operated by Airbus A320 family aircraft, as well as 3 flights per week to Bristol Airport and 2 flights a week to Manchester Airport. British Airways also operates nine weekly flights to London Heathrow being operated by an Airbus A320-200. Royal Air Maroc Express also operate twice weekly flights to Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport, which continue onto Casablanca Airport. The Schengen Border Code comes into effect next Friday. EU countries are obliged to systematically check everyone entering and exiting Schengen borders as a measure against terrorism and for increased security. There are, however, a number of safeguards in place, with the country concerned having to ensure these checks do not create delays. The measures will be put in place at the Gibraltar La Linea border.

There is a myth that as long as there are these monkeys on the rock, Gibraltar will remain British and not Spanish. When the population went down to just a mere 7, Winston Churchill, then Prime Minister, ordered the import of these monkeys from North Africa to replenish the population. Yes, even Prime Ministers are prone to superstition! Gibraltar governs its own affairs, though some powers, such as defence and foreign relations, remain the responsibility of the Government in the UK. The British Pound is the currency there and you need a visa as you would to enter Britain, depending from where you are. The airport is interesting in that a road runs through the runway and traffic has to be suspended when a plane is about to land. The airport is considered one of the hardest on which to land.
